"The Young Victoria"
verdict: 8/10
year: 2009
directed by: Jean-Marc Vallée
~ you might think this is just another history waiting to be told or maybe an epic film worth watching. well, for me it's both.
For someone like me, who loves watching this kind of setting and era but has no idea about history... well, this would definitely be a good film to start with.
It talks about queen victoria during her golden age, only 18 when she became the queen.she was considered to be inexperienced, fragile and still too innocent to govern, but her cool temper, quick thinking and vision somehow gave way and made the people realizedthat she's prepared to take this reign and with the loyal aide of his husband, who's faithful, dedicated his passion and concerns to the people as well as the council member and eventually, nurtured a lot of aspects concerning the arts and some housing projectsfor the poor which were not given much attention at that time. Also considerd to be the longest reigning queen ever. She never re-married after her husband died of typhoid fever at the age of 42.
The Cast:
Emily Blunt- who also starred in the devil wears prada, portrayed queen victoria perfectly if not too well. Because, i've only seen her film twice, i still have a hard time rememberingher face and getting into her role at some scenes.
Rupert Friend- is i think one of the upcoming actors to look out for...i think he's good geman accent, he's this charismatic soul that lets you into him and he doesn't over-act his role as some actors would.
among the great cast in this film are Paul Bettany- also in The davinci code and the veterans- Jim Broadbent and Miranda Richardson.
A movie about love, history and redemption.

The story:
It's about this 50-ish woman played by Nathalie Baye, divorced and works for a tv shopping network. She hires guys-for-sex and meets this young 30-ish guy played by Eric Caravaca, who's charming, elegant and very friendly.
But Eric leads a double life in this film- He looks good when he's with a client, but once he's home, he has to wear his drabby clothes and his wedding ring. Her fiance doesn't have any idea that he's an escort.
He has to support his fiance's family and also her old granny who lives in
an old tenement.
At first, the relationship between the two of them was just purely business,
but as the story progresses, they both realize that they needed each other and that love and friendship begins to deepen...eventually, Eric was caught by her fiance and even threatens to call off their marriage but realizes that she can't because, she's depending on Eric's money also for her salon which was bound for closure...

"The Reader"
verdict: 9.5/10
directed by: stephen daldry
year: 2009
D'apres le roman de: Bernhard schlink
~adjectives to describe in this movie: provocative, moving, touching...
one of the best movie i've seen so far... it never ceases to amaze me how good Kate winslet can act... there's no doubt about it...matched it with Ralph fiennes, who's utterly terrific in his character. Although i'm not familiar with the young actor played by David kross, i think he portrayed his character very well... and the way the story weaves and how it unfolds slowly, will leave you for more and not drag you to boredom.
Set in world war II, during and after hitler's regime. The story is about two people, one an adolescent young boy, curious about everything, confused and maybe a little lost... and of a woman around late thirties, illiterate, uneducated, sad and torn by despair... together... amidst the war and judgement... they had a love affair that seems to last forever... until, feelings changed, war broke out, irrational decisions had been made... and suddenly, the love story becomes a mystery and a thriller..
this is an amazing story... one that is unforgettable... it will change the way you think about life, about love, about sadness and humanity...
"The Boy in Stripped Pajamas"
verdict : 7/10
directed by: Mark Herman
year: 2008
music by: James Horner
D'apres de roman de: John BOyle
~` The setting was world war II. It's a story between 2 innocent children, both in two different worlds, set apart by war, torn by confusion. It's a very touching and emotional movie, one that will leave you teary eyed in the end... I can just imagine how vivid the book itself might be.
I long for the last part bec. for me, it will leave you hanging... hoping that the truth isn't as bad as it looks.
The reality in this movie will show you how horrific and demonic the germans can be in those times, how hitler himself alone can brainwash the minds of these people. How their selfishness influence the lives of the innocent and young ones.
Although i'm not familiar with the actors, i think it was a well made movie.

year: 2009
Based on a book by: Greg Berendt and Liz Tuccillo
Great cast and very typical "st.elmo's fire", light hearted movie.
about love... this flick deals with how we interpret signs in our life, how men and women think diffrently and thoughts about commitment, about getting to know a person, about finding true love. Obviously, some parts are funny and some will leave you teary-eyed but it was quite entertaining.
Ben affleck played it cool, as the guy who doesn't believe in marriage and Jennifer Aniston was the stuck up girl longing to be married to Ben bec. after 7yrs. they're still technically together but not married. One of the actors is played by newcomer Bradley Cooper who's also in the fave sitcom Kitchen Confidential by the famous chef/writer Anthony Bourdain,he played quite a hideous role, he's married to jennifer connelly- who's an O.compulsive freak, He isn't happy about his marriage, he feels suffocated and somehow is attracted to this other girl played by Scarlett johansson as the young chick who likes married men and likes to play around, toying guys she wants and rejects, who is friends with drew barrymore, although she played small parts in this film, she was one of the producers and his ex-boy friend played the part as the guy who owns the Bar,( don't know his name),also, jennifer connelly- who thinks everything is in order with her life but soon realizes that marriage with Bradley seems to be falling apart, as he's cheating withe another woman. Then the newbie ms. Ginnifer goodwin...who is the narrator of this movie.. i have to rewind the last part of the movie bec. i'm not familiar with her name though i've seen her in other flicks before.
the music- ost of the film were catchy from my favorite - keane- somewhere only we know...
to the Ting-Tings..
to maroon 5, James Morrison, r.e.m, corrine bailey rae, lily allen ,
oh! and there's a rendition of Scarlett Johansson- Last Goodbye... never thought she could sing... but nice voice...
My Blueberry Nights
verdict: 5/10
directed by: Wong kar wai
~i've seen Chungking Express and 2046. I think wong kar wai is very imaginative and artistic no doubt about it, but sometimes he tends to be too dramatic, dragging for too much creativity making the real plot of the story boring and flat. This film on some parts are just the same with Chungking express, the storyline with a girl and a guy meeting in a bar/resto, the express train line going back and forward, the narrator, the same music played over and over again...
Wong kar wai... he likes to play with his lenses, up close and zooming out...his colors are so vivid that you'd remember the colors blue, violet, red. It's also like 2046, he had this certain redundant scenes where it keeps reapeating over and over again.
if not for Jude Law or Natalie portman for that matter, Norah jones, well, she is a jazz singer not an actress, that's for sure...i would not like movie at all, i have to forward it on my dvd player... such a waste bec. this could be a romantic movie,it kinda leaves you hanging.
Notting Hill
year: 1999
verdict: 9/10
~ can't believe how time flies so fast! seems like yesterday, i was just watchin this flick and now, it was part of a history...
well, the perfect mixture of romance, comedy, light warm hearted rolled into one and the soundtrack with ronan keating's -when you say nothing at all ( altough i preferred Ms alison krauss' rendition better)- was romantic and all of it , i should say was amazing...
you got the best comedic actress of all time- Ms. Julia Roberts and the rest is history... hugh grant of course is himself, still the stuttering cute english guy who owns a quaint travel bookshop down notting hill, where he lives in this quite attractive blue door... stricking a friendship one day with the famous american actress played by julia. i mean, this cup of film is so exactly the same with Four weddings and a funeral... it's like deja vu! :)
you can also get a glimpse of misha barton- (starred in the famous tv series the o.c) while she was still a kiddo.
if you're tired, bored and just want to hang out on a lonely afternoon...then this is the flick for you>...
